Monkey 47 Gin

Monty left the Royal Air Force in 1951 and driven by his desire to learn watchmaking, moved to the Black Forest region. Although unsuccessful in watchmaking, he instead opened a country guesthouse named Zum wilden Affen, (The Wild Monkey) after Max, the monkey he sponsored in Berlin.

Whilst there, Monty did not want to give up a long-standing British tradition of a good gin and therefore began to develop his own unique Black Forest gin recipe.

Monty’s story trails off in the early 1960’s however during renovation works to the country house a wooden box was discovered containing a bottle and a letter. The letter contained the detailed recipe for the gin Monty had mastered. The bottle, labeled with a hand drawn sketch of a monkey with the words “Max the Monkey – Schwarzwald Dry Gin”.

This discovery led to two men named Alexander Stien, and his distiller, Christoph Keller working hard to reproduce the gin and eventually share it with the world. The name is taken from Max the Monkey and the 47 ingredients used to make the gin itself.

So, after that brief history lesson on Monkey 47 let’s get to the gin itself. 47 ingredients are used within this gin which brings with it a lot of different flavours and tastes. These are some of the known botanicals (are you ready?);

Acacia, Almond, Ambrette Seed, Angelica Root, Bee Balm, Black Pepper, Blackberry, Bramble, Cardamom, Cassia, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Cloves, Coriander, Cranberry, Cubeb Pepper, Dog Rose, Elderflower, Ginger, Grains Of Paradise, Hawthorn Berries, Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lemon Balm, Lemon Verbena, Lemongrass, Licorice, Lingonberries, Makrut Lime Leaves, Marshmallow, Nutmeg, Orange, Orris, Pimento, Pomelo, Rose Hip, Rose Mallow, Sage, Sloe, Spruce Shoots, Sweet Flag

Now that’s a lot of different botanicals. It could be said perhaps to many. However, we feel that this unique mixture has created a gin like no other. One that has been highly rated around the world. I for one, rate this as one of my favourite gins to enjoy, the many flavours and tasting notes you get with each sip is something to simply cherish.

If you’ve yet to try this gin out then I highly recommend you order yourself a bottle because with each taste you’ll pick up new flavours and aromas.

Why not order a bottle today and try for yourself?
